A Special Friday

by Christina

hello, Friends!

Did you all wake up in eager anticipation of the BIG event today?

I did. I couldn’t help it. My sister and my mom have been going on for weeks now about how we have to watch the Royal Wedding, even if that means getting up dreadfully early.

I must say, yesterday, as my mom showed me some behind the scenes videos of the wedding my anticipation grew. I was actually awed by Kate Middleton’s care at choosing the flowers. Each flower was chosen for its  meaning. Isn’t that neat? Also, the flowers for the arrangements were taken, after getting special permission from the Queen, from Windsor Park, the Royal Family’s beloved home.

My husband got up early with me, made a big pot of tea, and together we watched history pass before our eyes. It was an awesome moment and one that really honored the sacredness of marriage.

Then Lil John woke up and I had to bustle about. BUT… John and I did run back down to the TV to catch “THE KISS” on the balcony.

This afternoon a dear friend of ours is hosting a Royal Wedding Tea for us. We are going to sip tea, eat yummy cake and chatter about the details. I’m looking forward to it immensely!

I hear the dress code for the day is red, white and blue…. and yes, I am going to wear a hat to the tea. Why not!? =)

ta-ta for now!

PS: I didn’t say anything about the lovely yellowness in the photo above, did I? Hmmm…. well, you’ll just have to stay tuned! =)

Another Sweet Birthday

by Christina

My darling little niece turned 1 yesterday. What a milestone – especially for her, well, for us too.

What a year it has been for her and my sister and brother-in-law. In some ways this birthday was a celebration of much more than 1 year. It was a celebration of her every development and achievement since coming through heart surgery.

At her birthday party no one really voiced the words because… well… it’s just not usually said at a 1st Birthday Party – but we were all rejoicing sooooo much that Laura is with us and doing really, really well. In fact, she was holding on to a radio flyer wagon and WALKING! Not by herself, but still, that is quite an achievement for her!

My sister and I are both quite fond of Posie Get’s Cozy’s blog. When Posie (Sorry Alicia, I always think of you as Posie) posted her new little Mina Dress I knew I had to make it for Laura’s 1st Birthday.

So, here is my version. I forgot to get some pics of Laura in it… oh, well, another post.

Thank’s Alicia for such a sweet pattern!

happy knitting, dear friends!

(Or should I say on this one, happy crocheting!)

Easter Take 2

You have to go over and check out my sister’s post on Easter. Far better than my brief post!

Easter 2011

by Christina

Things are gradually returning to normal around here after a week’s preparation for Easter Brunch at my house.

It was a wonderful time with friends and family – of course in my mind it all went by too fast.

I particularly enjoyed watching John experience Easter.

I grew up in a very conservative Christian household and we did not do Easter baskets or Easter egg hunts. While I would still consider myself a conservative Christian, I think it is important to celebrate with gusto and with joy the feast days of the church. By doing so I think we embrace and celebrate the grace and peace Christ made possible for us to enjoy.

This Easter I hid over 5 dozen eggs for John and his cousins to find.  I indulged my inner child and took off my shoes to run through the soggy grass and muddy ground in the great hunt.

I do hope that you all had a lovely Easter!

The Fiber Fair

by Christina

Hello, friends!

Oh, my goodness what a week! Thank you all so much for your b’day wishes here and on Facebook! You all are sooooo kind! It really lifted my spirits and dried out the damp feeling that was beginning to creep in about being 30! Thank you all! You are the best!

I’ve been running around this week trying to get everything organized for a blissful Easter Sunday and haven’t had a moment to catch up with you all. So sorry about that.

So, let’s start at the very beginning…. one week ago I drove down to the Greencastle Fiber Event. I love going every year. My husband reminded me of the time he laughed at me for going – this was 8 years ago – right after we had met. He had never known anyone that went to fiber fairs!

Eight years ago the fiber fair was a bustling, hustling place. There were 4 barns – 2 outdoors and 2 indoors. The place was crowded with vendors, animals and people. It was a jolly place.

Last year I thought I saw the biggest change there were 2 indoor barns and one outdoor barn. And I thought that was small and a sign of the times.

I was actually nervous this time when I went. There were 2 indoor barns and a handful of vendors in the barn outside. And the indoor barns were not as full as they once had been.

It made me wonder… and contemplate… and think….

But… that aside, I had a lovely time.

My friend, Cinda, had her booth at the Fiber Event for the first time. I am so proud of her. I taught her how to dye fiber and she took off with it. She is a true artist when it comes to color combinations! I just love her fiber!

And don’t you just love the name of her wool? SassyBee Fiber! It’s just the best!

All her colorways were tempting!

She even had some laceweight dyed for the non-spinners! Can’t wait until she does sock yarn! Won’t that be wonderful! Think of the shawls!

I purchased a lovely colorway – Frosty Fall Leaves! Isn’t it scrumptous? I can’t wait to spin it… I think it will be a neckerchief – what else? I’m in love with neckerchiefs right now!

Turning 30

by Christina

Today I’m 30. It’s strange to even write that sentence. I never imagined myself in my 30s. For some reason I just thought, “Oh, yeah, some day I’ll be 30.” But I never thought that day would arrive.

Well, that day has arrived today, amidst a horrible thunderstorm and torrential rain. Is it a sign? =) Maybe just a little symbol of my reluctance to turn 30. =)

I have thoroughly enjoyed my 20s. I graduated from a small technical college and started working professionally as a freelance court reporter. I was delighted to be hired by one of the best court reporting firms in our city. I met and married my wonderful husband in my 20s. I started knitting with gusto in my 20s and then launched into designing in my late 20s. I started my own teeny, tiny business in my 20s. And I had my wonderful little boy in my 20s.

It makes me wonder how in the world can it get any better? Which also makes me think — oh, I’d love to stay in my 20s my whole entire life! =)

And yet… how was I to know all the wonderful things that awaited me in my 20s until I lived them?

So here I go, with all the bravery I can muster, into my 30s!

The Fiber Fest

by Christina

It’s that time of year again!

The Greencastle Fiber Fair is today and tomorrow!

Hooray for spring!

So guess where I’m headed this afternoon – by myself! (Note the BY MYSELF bit. I’m really looking forward to it – wandering amongst things I love and not having to worry if Lil John needs this or that!)

Greencastle!

Hope to see some of you there!

Just For Fun

by Christina

I’m sitting down with my after lunch cup of coffee to pop by and say “hi” to you all. Thought you might get amused by yesterday’s after lunch cup of coffee. I enjoyed it outside in the sun while Lil John played “cars.” I joined in too — how can I resist his sweet little voice calling, “Mama, mama, plee (i.e play) car?”

But what I really wanted to show you today was my latest, “Just for Fun Knit.” I have to have those JFFKs, you know. I find them relaxing and restorative. Whenever I’m working on a knit I’m writing up I do find myself taking so much care with it. Sometimes I just need something that I just do without thinking and just for me.

And I am in love with the finished result! Ah, pure bliss.

I used up some leftovers from my Elizabethan Shawl – how could I let lovely Isager Alpaca 2 sit on the stash shelf?

Now I can’t wait to wear it! I think this weekend will be a good time to debut it. Rainy and cold is the forecast. Ah, well….

Soaking up Spring

by Christina

I know, I know. My posts lately have just been about walks in gardens. I’m so sorry…. but that’s where my weekend free time has been spent lately. And I’m soaking it up!

I think Spring is the most phenomenal time of year. Why? Because after the death and cold of winter the earth wakes up and from it spring the most beautiful, the most fragrant, the most stunning flowers. What is more vivid than red tulips & neon yellow daffodils? What is more fragrant than the sweet scent of viburnum at dusk? (Or Lilly of the Valley for that matter)

I guess one of the reasons I embrace spring so wildly and completely is because it symbolizes the hopefulness and the restoration of life. Ah, but I’m droning on and on…

Like I’ve said before – we happen to live close to a lovely old estate that has been turned into public gardens and our city’s art museum. It’s a lovely place to go on a Sunday afternoon and walk around. John loves exploring the paths and climbing the steps. And the open green spaces…. oh, my hold on to your hat – he’s off like a rocket.

(See what I mean? On the run before you can get a decent picture!)

So that is the fun thing we did this weekend. What did you do?

Sassy Bee Fibers

by Christina

Hello friends!

I hope your day is as sunny and lovely as mine. We have a bright blue sky and big puffy clouds today. The grass is greening up nicely (except for the places that died during the drought last year) and the daffodils are blooming. And what is more cheerful than the color of a daffodil?

But…I’m digressing….

I wanted to pop in today and show you some lovely fiber I’m working with right now. It’s from a friend of mine in spinning group. This spring she has started her own little fiber business! Isn’t that just marvelous? I do think she’s a champ for doing so. Her little company is called Sassy Bee Fibers – don’t you just love the name?

Her first show is going to be the Greencastle Fiber Fest, April 15 & 16. I can’t wait to see her booth – it sounds like it’s going to be lovely.  She also sells her fiber up at Stitches & Scones  - so we can all get it after the fiber fest too.

I was privileged to try some of her fiber and I have thoroughly been enjoying it. I love the fact that her fiber is all-American sourced.  And it is dyed to perfection – no felting or tough bits! Just pure happiness!

I can’t wait to buy more in Greencastle!
