Shoes

by Christina

I laugh when I look at my feet these days.

I always tend to think that shoes tell a lot about a person. Who they are, what they like, what kind of pain level they can tolerate, what their job is, who they wish they were.

Right now, in my stage of life I’m a Granola person.
I’m the mom of a two year old who likes to be outside.
I’m the mom of a boy thus I’m on my feet running around a lot.
I’m a mom so keeping comfortable while working long hours is key.

What kind of shoe are you right now?

Little Worlds

by Christina

I have been invited to attend a terrarium party tomorrow. Isn’t that exciting? I’m really looking forward to it. So much so that I’ve been talking about it rather a lot this week. Funny, isn’t it… things that you are excited about tend to get a lot of “talk time.”

But I have learned some very interesting things. When I told my mother about my excitement she said, “Oh, yes. I used to make terrariums. My Aunt always had a large terrarium on the coffee table and it was quite interesting to watch it grow.”

When the warm weather brought us all out of our houses this past week, my neighbor and I stood chatting on the sidewalk in the sunshine. I mentioned that I was going to a terrarium party on Saturday and she mentioned, “Oh, my mother was always so good at terrariums and usually had one around the house. She would get tree frogs and place them in the arrangements. ”

I thought it was rather interesting to hear about the terrarium experiences of others. But all this talk made me really, really eager to go to this terrarium party and make my own…. so eager that, well, I gave in to my whims and put together a “make do” terrarium. “Just until I make my real terrarium.” I said to myself.

John and I pulled on our rubber boots, gathered a cake stand with a dome and a trowel and marched off to the mossiest spot of our yard. He loved digging in the dirt for a moment but then found some sticks to play with until he went on a hunt for Pooh Bear and Piglet in the woods. I contented myself to arranging bits of moss and stone until I had something that looked decent.

And now our “Made-do” terrarium is sitting on my kitchen table, basking in the sunshine. John and I peer at it during meal times, wondering what will grow, what will blossom and what it will become.

Now I can’t wait to make my “real one”.

Working With Wool

Hello Knitters,

Behind the scenes I’ve been doing something I rarely do – wool embroidery and crochet.

My first skill was crochet – my mom taught me when I was little. I made all sorts of things for my dolls. And then I made things for my mom and sisters.

It’s funny how life is… you know, I get a happy little feeling when I’m doing a little bit of crochet. I bet it’s childhood lurking in the background.

Anyways… this is what I’ve been up to.

Why? well, have you noticed? I really need a new camera for this blog. The above pictures were taken for me by my lovely sis. They are better than the regular snaps you see around here.

My plan is this: to sell a few of these fingerless gloves I am making on etsy and then to buy my sis’s camera from her…. =)

Yes, believe it or not, I have just set up an Etsy shop!

What have I been reading? Classic Railway Murders by Jonathan Baker

I know – not very intellectual … but honestly, at 9 pm at night I really don’t feel like reading anything very wordy. My brain is fried from talking to a 2-year-old all day long. It’s my turn to be entertained.

The Rag Bag Cardi? Well, it’s currently being blocked. But I can already see I am going to take out the neck edging. It is absolutely ghastly.  The grand “ta-dah” isn’t far away…

Playing House

by Christina

Hello Friends! So sorry for another little absence.

Towards the end of last week I found myself busy, tidying the house for company.

And then the weekend came and with it company and the house was filled with laughter, little children, lots of food, heaps of tea and fond memories.

The house is quiet again… but not for long… in a couple hours fun and laughter will descend upon the house… Heather and mom are coming over to work on a project with me…

I’ll tell you about it soon!

ta-ta for now!

Warm Woolies

by Christina

knit knitted sweaterWe have received a dusting of snow. Just enough to make you wish for more – especially when you have a little 2 year old who loves to go sledding.

We have been lazing around the house, enjoying JK’s time off and getting a few household projects accomplished.

I finished this warm garter stitch sweater before Christmas but with all the flurry of the holiday I didn’t get to show it to you. There is no pattern, just a fun knit for me. Next time I think I would put a bold cable running down the back – so as to off set the two front cables. And yes, it was such an enjoyable knit, I would make it again!

And now… I’m off to laze around a bit more!

The Last Day

by Christina

Last year, on New Year’s Eve, I remember thinking, “I just have to get through one more year of JK’s studies, just one more year. You can do it.”

And now, that year has ended.  JK has completed his last class – mind you, the last one wasn’t too hard… in fact… the last one consisted of sharing a bottle of wine with his professor at the Columbia Club (oh, and a lot of reading).

Even though it was a busy year, it had some really lovely moments. It was a hard year too – I’m sure a lot of you out there can attest to that fact… the Great Recession rolls on.

I have accomplished my goal of getting all of the last projects of my needles before the beginning of 2012. Yes, I do have a lot of finished projects to show you and some new patterns.

And… speaking of new things and new patterns, I am starting a newsletter for CCKnits. I will be sending out 50% coupon codes to all newsletter subscribers when new patterns go live – so you will want to make sure you are a newsletter Subscriber!

Ah, well, JK is back from getting a movie… I am ready to go knit!

I’ll see you in 2012!

Happy New Year!

Savoring

by Christina

Tonight I’m down in my “Elving” den trying desperately to knock out a few more presents. Why do I have so much fun making presents? I don’t know.

Took many trips down memory lane today as I attended the funeral of an amazing woman. Put things in perspective. Remembered what is truly important in life. It was good for the soul.

Musing on Thanksgiving

by Christina

november woods

I always find myself getting rather sentimental and “in a musing mood” around Thanksgiving.

On the Winslow (my father’s side) of the family we are descendants of the pilgrims that came over on the Mayflower (Edward and Gilbert Winslow).

I find myself musing on what it would have been like for them November 1621. Death, hardship, cold, and hard labor were terms of life for them.

Edward’s wife, Susanna White, came over on the Mayflower with her husband William White and a young son. She gave birth to a second son soon after landing in the new world. And then lost her husband William that first winter.

By the first Thanksgiving the following year she had married Edward (probably a necessity to survive).

Can you imagine?

Sometimes I think life is hard.
But then November comes and I remember what my ancestors went through, I think again.
