Strange as it may sound, the other day I was musing on this Great Recession we are currently living through, and decided I wanted to come up with a piece that summarized and marked “The Great Recession,” for me.

Hardly anyone around me talks about The Great Recession. I hear about it on the news. I know it is evident in my budget every week when I go food shopping. I feel the pinch in other areas of the household. I know others are going through it too… but it is something that is not talked about in friendly chatter.

In that regard, The Great Recession feels rather lonely. Like something I am experiencing all by myself, when I know I’m not.

And so… I decided… I am going to mark this Great Recession in my own life by knitting a very creative sweater… out of my fingering weight/sock yarn odds and ends. I’m hoping to draw upon the “Make do and mend” mentality to put this piece together.

Perhaps it is my own little “bail-out” to bolster my spirit and soldier on. Hopefully it won’t fail! =)

We shall see how it comes out…but in meanwhile… do you and your friends talk about The Great Recession?

Lamb's Lace Cardi on Me

I thought I would show you a few pics of how the Lamb’s Lace Cardi is being worn by me and my family. Here I am at Easter – yes, I know, I’m silly but I adore hats.

My sister Heather made a lovely blueish green Lamb’s Lace Cardi out of Cascade 220. She made the M and found that because it is an empire waist, she can wear it while she is pregnant! What a plus!

And here is my mom wearing it (and desperately wanting one herself) right before we headed off to the fiber festival. Doesn’t she look stunning in it?

Just in time for Baby John’s 6 month milestone, I finished the lovely Pebble vest by The Thrifty Knitter. The vest mimics the simplicity of Brooklyn Tweed’s Cobblestone Sweater and gathers two great stitches together – garter and stockinette – for a very pleasing look.

I love the fact that this vest buttons at one side and one shoulder. It is fantastically easy to put on a baby. And let me tell you, usually by the time we’ve put on a onesie and a shirt, he does not want anything else over his head.

Modifications: The pattern only has one size and calls for #4 and DK weight yarn, I used a #5 and light worsted (Berroco Ultra Alpaca) to make the vest a little bigger. The vest fit Baby John (6 months) with a little room to grow. Bear in mind that Baby John is a little smaller than most babies – probably more in the 5 month range.

Review:
The pattern is fairly easy to read and straight forward. It is a terribly easy knit and great for an inexperienced knitter. The down side is that there is only one size. However, this can be overcome slightly by adjusting the yarn and needle size. Of course, there is a limit to this adjustment. Overall, it’s a great knit and a very wearable garment for baby!
